What licenses for market reports (and custom options) are offered by publishers and resellers?

After searching for market reports, evaluating their quality and verifying the credibility of their authors, publishers and sellers, it’s time for purchase. But before placing an order for a market report, a company should understand what are the types of licenses available, consider the scope of use and dissemination of the report within the company and finally choose the correct license. To facilitate these tasks, in this article we present the most common types of licenses for market reports.

Licenses for market reports offered by publishers can be very different. Some of them define in details what can be done with the purchased data and what is prohibited. Others are general, and therefore very flexible or... ambiguous and incomprehensible. So let’s understand the 4 most common types of licenses for market reports.

Single user license

It is a license for one specific person or for one work station. Files are often protected against copying or available only after logging in to a publisher’s portal (which means that publishers can see the login IP number and can verify how many people use the access). Typically, the reports in this license do not have add-ins like a separate excel data file.

Team license

This license allows access to a market report to a specific number of people, e.g. 2-10 users. It is quite a common practice for this license that the entire team must work in one country. The market report is generally sent directly to people indicated during the process of purchase.

Site license

This license is intended for companies that need a report for employees from one particular location, e.g. only from Poland. It is an ideal solution for organisations that have offices in one country or that employ in one location the entire team responsible for a given section of the offer (e.g. staff dealing with food and beverages work only in Poland). With this license, everyone interested in a given topic can freely share data from the report with each other.

Corporate license

This is the widest available license. According to its provisions, every single person employed in the company can have access to the report – regardless of their workplace. So if the organisation has employees scattered around the world, and wants to, for example, publish a purchased report on their intranet, then this license should be purchased.

Higher license means more benefits

It is also worth remembering that higher licenses are often associated with additional benefits for customers. Here are some examples:

- ability to copy the content of the report, i.e. lack of solutions preventing cutting out the content from a report, which speeds up, for example, the creation of presentations or own studies,

- access to data files with all indices and statistics presented in the report (usually offered as an excel), which makes it very easy to prepare own analyses or import data into specific analytical tools,

- content customisation to the client's needs, usually not more than 10-15% of the report, but it gives an opportunity to, for example, receive additional charts (this option is only available from some publishers),

- analyst support within a specified period of time after the purchase (e.g. 1-3 months), including, for example, additional methodological explanations or expert comments (this option is only available from some publishers).

Professional reseller offers additional support

Licenses for market reports can be complicated or unclear. Usually, they also do not specify all non-standard options. In order not to get lost and not to make a bad purchase decision, it is worth to consult choosing a license with an expert in the field of market intelligence.

It is also worth remembering that negotiations with publishers are often acceptable, although they are actually quite time-consuming. Therefore, professional companies involved in the sale of market reports offer additional assistance in negotiations with the publishers.

As a liaison between the client and the publisher and as a trusted contributor to the publisher, the reseller often has much more bargaining power than a single customer. Thanks to this, for example, when buying a license for 1 user for a full price, the reseller may negotiate additional benefits (like data files in excel format). Or, during the process of upgrading the team license to a corporate license, the reseller can get an extra discount for the client from the publisher.
