Background and opportunities

The worlds’ second largest economy with a population of 1.3 billion citizens. Since starting market reforms in the late 1970’s the country has experienced rapid economic and social changes with GDP growth averaging at approx. 10% per year.

Whilst GDP growth has slowed in recent years it is still high in comparison with global standard and China is considered the largest contributor to world growth over the past 10-15 years, however, despite the size of economy and being the world’s largest exporter, per capita income is still below the world average.

The latest Five-year plan, announced in 2016, focused on the need to boost domestic consumption and increase innovation to make the economy less dependent on government investments, exports and heavy industry. This included continue modernisation that has seen the tertiary sector become the largest category of GDP share.
