The rate of growth in off-trade volume sales of soft drinks slowed significantly in 2024. This was due in large part to the introduction on 1 April 2024, of a tax on sugary carbonated drinks, which led to significant unit price increases. Carbonates containing sugar or other sweeteners are now subject to an excise tax of UZS500 per litre, while energy drinks face a UZS2,000 per litre tax. Rising production costs also pushed up prices. Moreover, consumer purchasing power was squeezed.
