Summary:
Hyperspectral imaging captures and processes data across a broad range of the electromagnetic spectrum to provide detailed spectral information for each pixel in an image. The technology helps identify and analyze materials and objects by observing their distinctive spectral signatures. It is used in applications such as defense and intelligence, agriculture and precision farming, food quality and safety, waste sorting and recycling, and control and monitoring in pharmaceutical production.
Unlike traditional RGB cameras, which use three visible light bands, hyperspectral imaging can examine how objects interact with many more spectral bands, ranging from 250 nm to 15,000 nm, including thermal infrared. This capability enables the study of light-matter interactions through a process known as spectroscopy. By using hyperspectral cameras or spectrometers, hyperspectral imaging records the spectral data of each pixel, creating a detailed representation of a scene. This allows for identifying and classifying materials based on their unique spectral signatures, providing information about their chemical and physical properties. The data is often represented in a hyperspectral cube, where two dimensions represent the spatial extent of the scene, and the third dimension contains spectral content. Technological Advances and Applications
One of the most notable technological developments is the integration of hyperspectral imaging with machine learning (ML) techniques, such as convolutional neural networks (CNNs), to improve the accuracy and speed of freshness detection in perishable food items. Research has shown that this combination can accurately assess the freshness of products such as tilapia filets and apples. Such advances in hyperspectral imaging enable the rapid and non-destructive evaluation of food quality, enabling the food industry to reduce waste, ensure safety, and enhance consumer satisfaction.
Hyperspectral imaging technologies are being miniaturized and integrated into small satellite platforms, expanding their use in environmental and agricultural applications.
